If you want to know how to walk on icy pavements...ask an Antarctic explorer!

Ashford explorer Will Gow, who has just returned from the Antarctic, has been giving advice on how to walk on icy streets.

Will Gow spent 66 days travelling 920 miles from Ross Island to the North Pole to celebrate the centenary of his great, great uncle Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition.

Shackleton got just 97 miles short of the pole, so Will and two others, Henry Worsley and Henry Adams, decided to celebrate the journey by completing it.

"It was fantastic", he said. "It was extremely cold though, with temperatures reaching minus 30 on the polar plateau without a windshield so this weather we're having now is really rather pleasant for me!"

After braving the elements for more than two months, the City worker can't believe the county's 10 inches of snow has caused such chaos. "I hope that the snow will disappear fairly quickly and that people can return to normal," he said. "I find it quite extraordinary, having just returned and the whole country has been brought a standstill, it's all very strange!"

Will and the others pulled the sleds on foot through extreme temperatures ranging from -5c to -30c, so we askws the cold expert for his tips for walking on ice.

Here's what he had to say:

• Wrap up warm - wear thick socks, gloves and a woolly hat.

• Wear solid footwear to give you a good grip on slippery surfaces.

• Pay attention to every step - where you are placing your feet is the most important thing.

• For a bit of extra support, use walking sticks
