Motorists in Ashford can be forgiven for getting lost or confused, according to a driving instructors’ leader.

Derek Goodwin says misleading or missing road signs are causing confusion and potential danger for drivers.

Mr Goodwin, chairman of the Ashford Driving Instructors’ Association, has produced a list of problem areas he has identified.

In a report to councillors he said: “There are several road signs in and around Ashford, which are either missing or do not accurately show the direction in regard to approaching and leaving the junction.

“This is a particular problem at a number of roundabouts.”

Mr Goodwin, who made a presentation at a meeting of Ashford council’s joint transportation board, cited one particular problem at the roundabout at the junction of Magazine Road and Maidstone Road.

He said the sign approaching the roundabout was not correct and had caused a dilemma in regard to directions given to driving lesson pupils as to whether it was “right’’ as shown on the sign or “ahead” which it actually is.

Mr Goodwin said that in general many roundabouts were also covered with trees and shrubs causing unnecessary blind spots.
