Major new road for Ashford gets the nod

A new road linking Ashford International Station to the A28 at Great Chart has been given the go-ahead.

Kent County Council’s planning committee has given final approval to the Victoria Way scheme.

The proposed new route south of Ashford town centre will following the existing Victoria Road through to the end of Leacon Road by Matalan and onto the A28 and will include a new public square.

Work on the initial phase of the scheme, which is hoped will lead to development in the surrounding area, is due to start next spring and finish in spring 2011.

The road is to be designed as an urban avenue, with wider pavements, cycle and traffic turning lanes, trees, restaurants and cafes. It is hoped to be finally completed by 2021.

Richard Alderton, head of planning and development at Ashford Borough Council, said: “Victoria Way will play a vital role in revitalising the town.

“When completed this road will help remove unnecessary traffi from town centre roads.

“It will not only improve access and open up new development opportunities south of the town centre, but over time it will become a good quality and vibrant new street for local residents and visitors to enjoy.”
