Fly-tipping was left in a secluded road for almost a month - despite being reported to the council weeks before.

Anxious residents alerted Kent County Council (KCC) after a pile of debris was left in Chilmington Green Lane.

Bricks, concrete slabs and even a fridge were among the mess, which was also believed to have included asbestos.

Self-employed Simon Good, who lives in the road, says he called KCC multiple times.

"I phoned KCC straight away to let them know about the rubbish," he said.

"They said someone would clear it immediately, but instead barriers were put up to block access to the road and the rubbish was left sitting there.

"I was then told it could potentially be toxic waste and the council had to check first before it was cleared."

The rubbish was reported on Monday, April 30 and was finally cleared more than three weeks later.

Mr Good, 61, added: "The council put barriers up around the waste but by the time they blocked the road they could have easily removed the rubbish.

"It's a constant battle with people coming along here and dumping rubbish, especially mattresses, but usually it's on the verges and not on the road.

"It is a quiet road but a car could quite easily have crashed into the the rubble."

"Why it is acceptable to leave potential toxic waste in the streets for children to rummage in, but it's not acceptable for a contractor to clear it promptly?"

KCC spokesman Thom Morris confirmed the rubbish was removed on Wednesday, May 16.

He said:“It was reported to us that a fridge, wood and rubble had been fly-tipped on Chilmington Green Lane.

“We had to close the road and arrange for a specialist waste disposal company to assess the fly-tipping before removal and clearance."
