It's still unclear when the iconic £8 million footbridge over the M20 will open.
The 140-metre suspension bridge running from Ashford’s Warren Retail Park to the Eureka Leisure Park was due to open in July but the opening has been repeatedly pushed back.
The delays in opening the bridge to pedestrians and cyclists has been criticised by Ashford borough councillor Michael Claughton.
Cllr Claughton (left), whose ward the Eureka Park end of the bridge is located in, said: “It’s an unfathomable delay. There have been descriptions of the bridge as 'iconic’ and so forth but that’s not much use unless it’s actually being used.
“The whole thing has been a little like the work on the Drover’s Roundabout which, quite frankly, has been embarrassing. It’s just not good enough.”
The final sections were lifted into place in May but the delayed opening led to rumours that the bridge was suffering from a dangerous “wobble”, a problem that hampered the opening of the Millennium Bridge in London.
Kent County Council spokesman Phil Scrivener denied there were structural problems and said bad weather had delayed finishing works, including painting and light-fitting.
