Paul Chambers has hailed Ashford United’s winning mentality but knows their chances of winning the Southern Counties East League title are still in the hands of others.

The 2-1 win over Erith & Belvedere at Homelands on Tuesday night reduces the deficit to four points between the two sides in the chase to catch long-time leaders Phoenix Sports.

The United boss said: “The result means a lot to us but we have to keep winning and focusing on every game.

“Six points against Tunbridge Wells and Erith have been massive for us because it closes the gap, but it’s still for the top-two to throw away to give us a chance but we will just keep plugging away and see how far we can go.”

Chambers will speak to Hythe manager Tim Dixon this week about Michael Yianni’s situation, after the midfielder turned out for United in midweek and has brought Jamie Collado back to the club, with the midfield player dropping down the pecking order at Reachfields.

United’s 11th successive win maintained their unbeaten home record and Chambers said:

“We have got a winning mentality and it’s a good habit to have.”

Michael Phillips (calf) is doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Corinthian while Darren Marsden is banned but Tom Scorer could return after a knee injury.

United are at Lingfield on Tuesday (7.45pm).
