Lovell looks forward to cup tie

Steve Lovell has urged his players to use Monday’s display in the 4-0 win over Whitstable as their benchmark for the rest of the season.

Town’s first home win came courtesy of an impressive display, spearheaded by two-goal striker Bradley Spice.

Mitchell Sherwood and Paul Jones were the other scorers and but for Whitstable keeper Kevin Fewell, Lovell feels his side might have doubled their victory margin.

He explained: "It was an excellent performance. It was 4-0 but no disrespect to Whitstable I think that flattered them a bit.

"Kevin Fewell played really well in goal and kept them in it particularly early on, but once we got the first one I always felt we could go and get a few more.

"The pleasing thing more than anything was that we did not concede a goal and we never really looked like conceding to be honest."

Lovell had been critical of the way his side had started in their three previous games and he wants his players to use Monday’s display as a launchpad for the remainder of the campaign.

He added: "Prior to Whitstable we’d not started any game at all well and I said to the players before the match that as far I was concerned this is the start of our season.

"Although we had four points on the board I was not pleased with our performances and in a way I’ve drawn a line under those first three games.

"People will say we’d made a reasonable start but it’s performances I look at because if you perform well the results will follow.

"Monday’s performance is now the benchmark and if we play like that on a weekly basis I think we’ll do really well."

Danny Lye (thigh strain) missed Monday’s game due to injury but could be back for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at home to fellow Ryman Leaguers Leatherhead.

Lovell expects a tough game but will be hoping his players can put on a show in front of the Meridian TV cameras who will be recording the contest.

Highlights wil be broadcast on their Monday night programme.

Lovell added: "Leatherhead will be a tough game but we’ll train Thursday and work on a few things and try to put a performance like we did against Whitstable. I’m sure if we play to our maximum we’ll do all right."
