Victory lifts Ashford into top spot

Fisher 0, Ashford 2

ASHFORD Town went top of the Dr Marten's League for the first time since November 1999 with a superb victory at Fisher Athletic last night.

Surrey Docks has never been the happiest grounds for Town with just one win in the five previous visits but Town showed their new confidence with a convincing win.

In an extra-ordinary match of nine bookings, two of which became sendings off for Fisher right at the death, it might have seemed that this was some sort of bloodbath.

But while both teams gave it all this was never a dangerous or even particularly dirty clash while the one tackle which probably should have earned an automatic red card for Fisher's ex-Folkestone man Richard Ponsford was only one of the yellows flourished by referee Michael O'Keefe.

Town went in front with a sixth minute goal from Simon Elliott. The second came near the end of the match through Lee McRobert.
