Ashford United manager Tommy Warrilow says defeat to Guernsey was worst performance of season

By Joe Harbert

Ashford United boss Tommy Warrilow admits this week’s defeat at home to Guernsey was his side’s worst performance of the season so far.

The Nuts & Bolts missed the chance to go second in Isthmian South East after suffering a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Channel Island club at Homelands on Tuesday night.

The match came only days after they beaten rivals Hythe 4-1 at Reachfields, and Warrilow insists his side went from one extreme to the other during the week – the 55-year-old even labelling Tuesday as embarrassing for the team.

“Every aspect of our game was poor,” Warrilow admitted.

“I’ve got no positives at all from the game. We didn’t hunt together, our passing was poor and our deliveries were poor.

“I don’t think anyone played well during the match.

“To be fair, Guernsey popped it about well, but we should be embarrassed to go from one extreme to the other from Saturday.”

He added: “As a team, it was easily our worst performance of the season. There’s no excuses, and I’ve told the boys that you’ve thrown away all of Saturday.

“It’s not acceptable and we’ll address it all on Thursday in training because that’s nowhere near what we’re about.”

Despite sitting in fourth spot in the table and scoring a league-high 33 goals, only Herne Bay and the division’s bottom five clubs have conceded more than United this campaign.

Following Tuesday night’s result, the Homelands outfit have now let in 26 goals in the league, eight more than at the same stage last season, although Warrilow says there is no need to hit the panic button after some recent positive displays from the team.

“It was shocking – we let them dictate play when they had the ball,” he added.

“But you can’t have a knee-jerk reaction and put a bomb underneath it. I’m not going to start panicking, but that wasn’t acceptable so we’ve got a lot to think about.

“Up until Tuesday we’ve been playing well, but that was awful and we’ll accept that, but I’m not going to get carried away with one really poor performance.”

United will hope to get back to winning ways again on Saturday when they travel to West Sussex to face 15th-placed Haywards Heath Town at Hanbury Park Stadium.
