Planners will tonight be asked to approve another big block of student flats in Canterbury.

The scheme due before the city council is for 212 beds on a site which is fast being becoming a student village.

The application is for a six-storey block built behind the existing Palamon Court in Rhodaus Town, which used to be part of the former Peugeot garage site.

The architect Guy Holloway recently won permission on appeal for another 146-bed block on the adjacent former St Mary Bredin School site on the ring-road and was also responsible for Palamon Court.

As with the previous application, the Oaten Hill and South Canterbury Association is objecting, calling the proposed structure “oppressive” and an over-development of the site.

The Canterbury Society believes the height of the development needs to be reduced by one storey to reduce the ‘canyon effect’.

In their report to the planning committee, council officers say the principle of six-storey student accommodation has already been established on the site in a previous application dating back to 2016 when 153 beds were approved.

If the new application is agreed, it will result in a contribution being required of the developer for £161,260 towards improvements in the Dane John.
