Crash closes A2 near Canterbury

A multi-vehicle crash caused traffic chaos London-bound on the A2 just outside Canterbury on Wednesday morning.

Two cars, a HGV and a van were involved in the accident between Barham and Bridge at 6.55am.

One car had overturned. The driver had escaped when emergency services arrived.

A man had to be cut free from a Saab which was still on all four wheels.

He was taken to hospital with suspected broken legs.

Two fire engines from Canterbury were sent to the scene and one came from Aylesham.

The road was closed while police worked with fire crews to clear the scene.

Watch manager Mark Jones said: "The road conditions are very icy and we would urge people to take extra care.

"The roads are always particularly bad in the mornings and the evenings.

"The man which we had to cut free from the Saab had a lucky escape. It is a strong and safe car, and it probably saved his life."

Crews were stood down at 8.15am.
