Driver racks up 124 parking fines

A SINGLE foreign-registered vehicle has clocked up 124 unpaid parking tickets in a Kent city.

The owner of the car is one of a group motorists labelled persistent evaders by Canterbury City Council who, it says, is "sticking two fingers up" at parking regulations.

Another driver has 126 outstanding tickets for his three vehicles. At the rate of £60 per ticket, that driver owes £7,560 without extra legal costs and interest he may have accrued.

Legislation which comes into force at the end of March will allow the council to remove cars which are repeatedly parked illegally.

Clive Metcalfe, parking services manager at the council, said: "These new rules will toughen up and streamline the system.

"At the moment we can instruct bailiffs, but the procedure for dealing with these persistent evaders at the moment is very cumbersome."
