Student’s near-miss after roof of East Station Snooker Club falls onto car

A university student says she was seconds away from being struck by a falling roof.

Charley Jerold was in her car outside the East Station Snooker Club in Canterbury when a large chunk of lead fell from the building and onto the vehicle.

She says she was just about to exit the vehicle at the time of the near-miss at about 9pm on Tuesday.

“I think the car next to me was hit too,” she said.

“If I had got out about 10 seconds before I could have potentially been hit.”

The 21-year-old says she was so shocked by the incident she posted about it online to warn anyone else using the Canterbury East Station Car Park.

“I always park in this car park as it’s the closest place to my student accommodation,” she said.

“I kept my car in the car park but moved it further down away from the building that was falling apart.

“More of that roof is definitely going to fall off. It was barely windy when it fell, so it basically just slid off.

“I’m just glad it hit the roof of my car and not any of my windows, so there was little to no damage.”

“I’ve only got a little cheap get-around car so I’m not fussed about any minor scraps and dents, but I think many of the other nicer cars that park in there would say different.”

The Canterbury Christ Church University student says she will keep using the car park but will avoid the area where the roof fell.

“I have no other choice on where to park, which will be an inconvenience as I have to carry a lot each week to and from my car, but would rather that than a smashed car window or a hit in the head from a roof,” she said.

A spokesperson for East Station Snooker Club said the day after the incident: “We are pleased and thankful to hear and see that Miss Jerold was not hurt or injured during this incident.

“Like many places due to the two most recent storms Isha & Jocelyn unfortunately we have sustained damage to our roof during these two storms.

“We have today contacted the owner of the car park, as this is not part of our land and is owned separately, and requested to block off the parking spaces under the damaged area of the roof for public safety until the repairs to the roof have been completed.”

They added the spaces would remain out of action until the repair work has been carried out.
