An unemployed ex-soldier has been jailed for six and a half years for possessing explosives.

Andrew Quinn, 26, is a former member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who are based at Howe Barracks, Canterbury.

Quinn, of Northgate Road, Glasgow, admitted possessing explosives for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy to handle munitions.

Three other men, all from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, have already been sentenced to a total of 28 years for their part in possessing explosives for an unlawful purpose.

Garry Graham, 37, a colour sergeant from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire and Martyn James Fitzsimmonds, 28, lance corporal from Glasgow, were found guilty of conspiracy to possess explosives for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy to handle munitions and conspiracy to steal.

They were both jailed for 12 years. Kieran Campbell, 27, a sergeant, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess explosives for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy to handle munitions. He was sentenced to four years.

Det Supt Tim Smith said: “This has been a challenging investigation involving close cooperation between Kent Police, Strathclyde Police and the Ministry of Defence.

“This is a positive and rewarding outcome that has been brought about by the hard work and determination by all those involved in the investigation.”
