Eight acres of blazing scrub land and gorse near Howe Barracks in Canterbury has been tackled by five crews of firefighters this afternoon.

It is the second time Kent Fire and Rescue Service has been called to the location following a smaller fire nearby yesterday afternoon.

The cause of the outbreak is unknown but the scrub is bone dry and the land is often the scene of grass fires in dry summer months.

Firefighters were called to the site shortly after 1pm today and were said to be "damping down" at 4pm.

They are expected to keep a watching brief on the land to ensure it doesn't start up again.
