Canterbury dad Biff Whipster among Insulate Britain protestors to avoid jail

An environmental campaigner from Kent has avoided jail for a second time for his part in Insulate Britain protests.

Biff Whipster, from Canterbury, narrowly avoided a custodial sentence after protests that saw campaigners glue themselves to the M25 last year.

Five Insulate Britain activists have been jailed at the High Court, after breaching an injunction by protesting on the M25 last year.

Meanwhile Whipster and 10 others have received suspended prison sentences after taking part in demonstrations between different junctions of the motorway on October 29.

National Highways, the organisation that manages England’s major roads, brought contempt of court proceedings against protesters accusing them of breaking an injunction granted in September aimed at curbing Insulate Britain’s road blockades.

Lord Justice William Davis, sitting with Mr Justice Johnson, sentenced protesters at a hearing in the Royal Courts of Justice this afternoon.

Four people who glued themselves to the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice in defiance of the proceedings yesterday were jailed for between 24 and 42 days, while another was jailed for 32 days.

The remaining protesters were given suspended sentences, but will be jailed if they breach the injunction within the next two years.

Whipster, 54, was given a 24-day term - the second sentence he has received for his involvement in the protests.

In December, he was charged with contempt in relation to two breaches of the government’s M25 injunctions, and was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for two years.
