The lengthy closure is to last until Tuesday, August 31, when the fast-food restaurant will reopen for indoor diners.

The reworked drive-thru, which is to boast a 'digital drive-thru lane, will then reopen further down the line.

Work on the project began last month after the fast food chain gained planning permission.

The extension will mainly be at the rear of the site, with the stock rooms and chillers being redesigned. A new entrance lobby for the eatery will also be created.

The McDonald's, which is on the Stour Retail Park, underwent a four-week makeover in 2018 when touchscreen kiosks were installed.

The Canterbury closure comes at the same time as another in Kent, with the branch at Gillingham Bowaters currently shut.

The Sturry Road restaurant is set to reopen on July 19.
