A pensioner was rescued from her home in Faversham in the early hours of Sunday after a fire started in her bedroom.

The 82-year-old woman raised the alarm when her smoke detector was activated at the property in Selling Road shortly before 2am.

Fire fighters from the Faversham station were quickly at the scene and crew members wearing breathing apparatus went into the house and brought out the owner to safety.

She was treated for the effects of inhaling smoke by paramedics and taken to the William Harvey Hospital.

The fire was contained on the ground floor where the woman was sleeping and investigators are looking into whether it was caused by an electric fan.
