Police probe after body is recovered from river

DETECTIVES are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the river in Canterbury city centre today.

It was discovered at about 7am by a resident of Stour Street lying in about 18 inches of water near the Canterbury Heritage Centre. Scenes of crime officers were called to the examine the area and police made preliminary enquires at flats over looking the river and local businesses. The body was removed from the river and taken to Kent and Canterbury Hospital for a post mortem.

Det Chief Insp Debbie Doe said it was too early to comment on the cause of death but efforts were being made to identify the man.

He is described as being aged in his late 40s with grey balding hair and white stubble. He was wearing a black sleeveless jacket, jeans and old white trainers.
