Residents of a flat fled their home when a pan of oil overheated on a hob and sparked a kitchen fire last night.

Two fire engines were sent to the property in Black Griffin Lane, Canterbury, shortly after 9pm.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus put out the flames using a hose reel jet, before clearing the home of smoke with a high pressured fan.

The residents were outside of the property before firefighters arrived and no casualties were reported.

Following the incident, crews are reminding members of the public to never leave cooking unattended and to always ensure appliances such as hobs, ovens and grills are switched off before leaving the room.

Safety officers also say that when cooking is finished, it's advisable to remove any pots or pans and allow them to cool, as the hob or oven might still be hot and cause them to overheat.
