THIEVES appear to have wrecked the chances of children from a special school taking part in this summer's Kent Youth Games.

It follows the theft of 11 mountain bikes, worth £1,150, from a shed at the Orchard school in Cambridge Road, Canterbury.

The bikes were bought by the school, which caters for children with learning difficulties, just over a year ago following a successful bid to the Awards for All lottery fund.

The youngsters were using them to train for the games which take place at the Kent University campus in June but their anticipation and hopes of taking part have now been dashed.

PE teacher Gaynor Harvey said: "It is a huge disappointment for the students who are angry and upset that they have lost their chance to compete."

The thieves smashed a padlock to gain access to the store. Seven of the bikes are black and have 26in wheels while the other four are blue and have 24in wheels. They all carry the Universal brand name.

Det Sgt Tracy Anstis said: "The culprits must have been aware of the venue they were targeting. It is understood these bikes were donated for the benefit of the children and, ultimately, it is they who have suffered."

Police believe the thieves probably used a vehicle to take the bikes away and are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them on 01227 762415 or alternatively in confidence on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
