A group of friends had been walking along Mercery Lane towards the High Street when they were approached by another group who were "verbally abusive" towards them.

This continued along the High Street to just past the junction with St Margaret’s Street, where two men - both in their 20s - then reported being assaulted.

They suffered facial injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The four suspects had left the scene when police arrived.

A police spokesman said: "However, immediate enquiries were carried out and three men along with a woman were located at a property in Highlanders Avenue and arrested in connection with the incident."

Detectives continue their enquiries to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

A stretch of the High Street was taped off by police this morning.

Passer-by Nick Sackett reported seeing a forensics team at the scene at about 9.30am.

The area has since reopened.
