A taxi driver helped flag down a police car when a man was hurt in a mugging in Canterbury.

The 29-year-old victim was targeted from behind and hit over the head in Sussex Avenue during the early-hours attack.

He was knocked to the ground and had his rucksack, wallet and headphones stolen.

The victim managed to get to a taxi and the driver flagged down a police patrol.

Now detectives are appealing for witnesses and hoping to trace the good samaritan taxi driver.

Three boys - aged 15, 16 and 17 - were arrested and charged with the alleged robbery, at around 2.15am on Saturday.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named, was remanded in custody. The other two were released on bail to appear at Canterbury Youth Court on April 16.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or the taxi driver who flagged down the police is asked to phone PC Kelly Boyd on 101 - quoting crime reference ZY/8245/13 - or Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
