A2: Crashes leave debris and queues between Barham and Brenley Corner

Traffic has now cleared on the A2, several hours after a series of crashes close to each other on the busy road.

It closed both ways at Wincheap near Canterbury, and then again a little further down on the coast-bound carriageway, following the accidents during this morning's rush hour.

Both sides reopened just before 11am, but congestion remained heavy until around 1pm.

Earlier, drivers reported long tailbacks coast-bound between the A28 and the A2050 turn-offs.

No major injuries were reported.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the A2 near Bridge at 6.50am to reports of an eight-vehicle collision.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called, and the road was closed near the A28 slip road while work was carried out to clear the debris.

One driver travelling London-bound reported being stuck in stationary traffic for around one hour 40 minutes, as emergency crews cleared the road.

She said she was being diverted off the A2 at Wincheap through Canterbury.

There were also delays on the roads off the A2.

It's believed the road had become frozen, then it had rained, causing sheet ice.

The crashes followed a yellow weather warning for ice.
