A train which crashed into a tree and then came to a standstill has sparked long railway relays.

Services between Ashford and Canterbury West have been delayed due to the accident, which prompted train operator Southeastern to issue a warning around noon.

“Due to a tree on the line near Chartham - services via the Canterbury West route may be delayed or diverted at short notice,” the firm says on social media media.

“Trains via Canterbury West may be diverted via Deal/Dover while the team removes the tree from the line.”

They later provided an update informing railway users that the tree had been successfully removed from the line.

However the falling foliage was struck by a train before it was noticed and this collision causing a part of the engine to break off.

Southeastern added: “The train which struck the tree has sustained some damage so staff remain on site.

“They are working to get the train moving as quickly as possible, which will then allow the line to reopen again.”

The railway provider assured customers that buses are being arranged to allow passengers to continue their journeys between Ramsgate and Ashford.

The British Transport Police are also at the scene to provide Network Rail with assistance.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “We are on scene at Chartham as a train has struck a tree.

“We are here to ensure the safety of those on board the train and assist Network Rail.

“The tree has been removed but a part of the train has broken off and Southeastern fitters are on scene fixing this as we speak.”
