Mr Geldof, from Faversham, was
presented with the award by fashion's most colourful personality
Zandra Rhodes, who is the university's new chancellor.

He said he was thrilled to be among
the 120 graduates at the degree ceremony and was also pleased to be
recognised for his contribution to culture and humanitarianism
rather than getting some other obscure doctorate.

He said: "I guess I was chosen
because I'm a face to show up for the kids, but it's still a
thrill."

Mr Geldof, who famously, demanded
money from viewers during the live concert he organised for Africa,
also commented on the failure of Kent TV, the county council's
broadcast channel which was launched by his production company.

He said: "It was disappointing
because we took a barrage of criticism, but I don't regret it and
we have used the experience to launch similar projects with other
authorities in the north-east and Ireland."

Mr Geldof also took the opportunity
to plug his new album 58 1/2, his age, and is due for release in
September.
