A woman and baby were rescued from a flat in Thanington after a suspected arson attack on Friday afternoon.

Two engines from the Canterbury station tackled the blaze in the block of flats at Alfred Close after getting the call at just after 3pm.

Residents from neighbouring flats were evacuated and the road was closed off while firefighters tended the blaze and its cause was investigated.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service says it does now know the cause of the fire, but police arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

He has been bailed until August 17.
