City's hockey girls defeated in play-offs

CANTERBURY Hockey Club's ladies went down 2-1 to Slough in the Premiership play-offs at East Grinstead.

They took a fourth lead lead through Jackie Laslett but Jane Smith, the country's leading scorer, levelled on 29 mintues and then deflected Mandy Nicholson's pass home for the winner eight minutes after half time.

Canterbury created several excellent chances after that but were denied by Slough keeper Lynette Smith, who had an outstanding game.

The start of the second half was delayed for around 45 minutes because there was not enough water available to soak the whole pitch.

Organisers had to call in the Fire Brigade to saturate the offending area.
