PUPILS at the King's School, Canterbury, have won the biggest ever haul of medals for any school in the history of the Great Britain Schools' Team Fencing Championship.

King's pupils picked up 30 gold and silver medals in the event, held at the King's School Recreation Centre.

Among the successes were gold medals in both the Under-16 men's epee and foil, the Under-18 men's foil, the Under-18 girls' epee, and the Under-14 sabre and women's sabre.

The mulitple medal winners included Toby Clapp, Jacob Coligan, Patricia Lopis Tarres, Oliver Maughan, Tom Mulvaney and James Williamson.

Pupils at the Junior King's School at Sturry played an important part in the medal haul. Among them, Francesca Berry, 11, and Tom Chung, 13, won a couple of medals each.

Stephen Winrow-Campbell at the King's School said: "We are, of course, delighted at setting this record.

"The young fencers at King's train hard and are very committed. They also make the most of the excellent coaching provided by Paul Romang, who works as the Scottish national coach as well.

"King's has a long track record of success in national and international competitions and has produced a good many internationals over the years.

"We have high expectations of our pupils and are very proud of them. It is particularly good to see that the strong fencing at the Junior King's School has played its part."
