Dartford Harriers’ teenager Gemma Brown had an English Schools Championship debut to remember, winning the discus bronze medal at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.

Brown, 13, the Kent Under-15 champion, produced a personal best and AAA Grade 1 throw of 30.87, with the gold and silver medallists both a year older.

Gemma followed in sister Samantha’s footsteps who won bronze in the U15 75m hurdles last year but finished eighth this time in the U17 300m hurdles in 45.96 another personal best and AAA’s grade 1 performance.

Natalie Hickmott, 15, just missed out on a medal in the 300m, finishing fourth in a new club record time of 39.71, with only two hundreths of a second, separating second and fourth.

She and Samantha then teamed up in the 4x100m as Kent finished fourth in the final.

Tim Billings was fourth in the U17 boys shot put, while two other youngsters suffered injury problems in the build-up to the event.

Adam Chalk, a contender in the 100m hurdles, qualified for the semi-finals in 13.7, despite suffering a foot injury in the relays, spoiling his chances of making the final.

Another debutant, Southern Counties silver medalist Daniel Shaw, finished 12th in the javelin with a throw of 49.11m, after suffering a shoulder injury following his personal best performance last month.

Aaron Barham finished 11th in the U17 boys high jump, clearing 1.82m, five short of his personal best in the event.
