Rescue crews spent two hours releasing a seriously injured couple from their wrecked car on the M25 last night.

It could have been a lot worse.

Another driver spotted their car suddenly veer off the motorway and disappear.

They raised the alarm.

It was just as well.

They plunged down a steep bank before hitting a tree.

"They were very lucky that someone saw them leave the motorway and contacted the emergency services or they could have been there for a long time," a Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said.

"Where they crashed was very inaccessible and could not be seen from the motorway.

"It was quite a difficult rescue."

The rescue crews had to use ladders to get down to the wrecked Seat car before the couple could be released.

The man and woman were both conscious through out the rescue.

The accident was on the clockwise carriageway between junctions three and four at 7.25pm.
