A child has been hit by a car outside a school this morning.

A girl was left with a cut to her face and may have injured her leg.

It happened outside Oakfield Primary, in Oakfield Lane, Dartford, just before 9am.

Police spokesman Sally Smith said: "Officers were called following a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and a child.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to treat the child who was reported to have suffered a cut to their face, at this stage the injury is not thought to be serious."

Kelly Grehan, 38, who runs the Dartford Safer Roads campaign group, believes a child will have to be fatally involved in a collision before any action is taken.

She said: "One of the main reasons we campaign is that this really affects our children - they do not feel safe walking to or from school.

"Change needs to be made urgently before someone is killed, that's the only way they'll do something."

The mother-of-two has been working alongside parents, including Jessica Maddox whose daughter Gracie, 12, was left on life support when she was knocked off her bike outside Fleetdown primary school in June last year.

A petition was created after Gracie was hospitalised for four months, gaining more than 1,500 signatures, to try and make the streets safer.

Darren Povey's son Dean was also hit by a car in Temple Hill, Dartford, in September and is worried about his child's safety.

He said: "I joined the Dartford Safer Road Campaign after my son was hit by a car and hearing of yet another incident is heartbreaking and brings back so many awful feelings”

Mrs Grehan wants to change the speed limit on all the rounds near schools to 20mph and bring back lollipop people to help manage traffic.

She said: "We'd really like to see Kent County Council (KCC) engage more with us then solve the issue.

"Children can't judge the speed of cars so they need safer conditions in the area.

"We've lost a lot of lollipop people who would really help.

"Parking is a problem as well as everyone starts to park on the pavements - it's time for some proper change, before it's too late."
