New Charlton manager Phil Parkinson started the process of freshening up his squad with the loan signing of former Reading captain Graeme Murty.

The experienced 34-year-old right-back looks certain to make his debut in Saturday's home game against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest.

Murty has spent the last 10 seasons with Reading after the club paid York City £700,000 for him in July, 1998.

The Scotland international has been sidelined with calf and hamstring injuries since pre-season and made his first appearance of the season during the Royals' 2-0 defeat at Cardiff in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Parkinson said: "I felt we needed to get one or two players in the building with a winning mentality. Graeme certainly has that from his time at Reading and he has been promoted from this league before.

"He has a strong mentality and a lot of experience. I played with him at Reading and he's a good player but most of all he is a strong character and he will add a lot to this group of players."
