Goalshy Welling had to settle for a point at lowly Bognor in Blue Square South on Tuesday night.

The Wings failed to show much attacking ambition and manager Andy Ford was happy to avoid defeat with his team not firing on all cylinders.

"I think on that performance that it is a point gained," said Ford. "We could have lost that game.

"Beforehand, we were hoping to nick all three points but it wasn't to be. Bognor have strengthened their side in the last few days and it will be interesting to see their next few results."

Welling dropped keeper Jamie Turner after his howler at Hayes & Yeading last weekend and his replacement, Scott Andrews, did little wrong.

Indeed, Andrews was called on to make a fine stop from Joe Gatting on the stroke of half-time to prevent Bognor going ahead.

Welling could have taken a 25th-minute lead but Joe Healey hurried his shot when put clean through but, in truth, it was a poor performance going forward.

Ellis Green and Ryan Martin failed to influence the play and both had been withdrawn within 10 minutes of the second half.

Martin's replacement, Dorian Smith, fluffed an excellent chance with his first chance but it was all the Wings had to offer after the break.

Their own worst enemies with too many free-kicks conceded, Welling were fortunate to escape with a clean sheet as Gatting twice passed up simple openings late on, including a close-range header from an 88th-minute corner.

Ford added: "I thought the pitch would have suited us but we didn't get our wide players into the game at all.

"They had the upper hand in the midfield and that's why we tried to change it."
