Visit Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Bowling Club on Sunday and give the sport a try.

That’s the invitation from club president Arthur Hockley, who is hoping to attract newcomers at the open day between 10am and 3pm.

He said: "All are welcome. Come and have a go and enjoy yourself."

The club off Cavell Square, Mill Hill, Deal, has just received a £6,000 grant for a new mower from the Bridging the Gap grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Apart from Sunday’s open day, future events at the bowling club include the annual E.W.Leivers Memorial Open Triples from June 28 to July 4.

Mr Leivers was a manager of Betteshanger Colliery, which closed in 1989, and was killed underground in 1954. Proceeds from the competition will go to the Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust.
