Dover shooting: Police test handgun

Shooting scene, Dover
Shooting scene, Dover

Forensic officers are to carry out tests on a handgun, recovered from a property near the scene of a shooting in Dover on Monday, to establish if it is the one used in the incident.

It happened at the junction of Frith Road and Charlton Green - outside the former Royal Mail sorting office - at around 8pm on Monday.

When police arrived the victim was in Salisbury Road being coomforted by a friend. A woman was also giving first aid.

The victim suffered what is described as a single gunshot injury to the chest and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with the bullet still in situ.

He was later transferred to a London hospital where he underwent surgery for the removal of the bullet.

His condition is said to be serious, but stable, and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

At one stage police said they also wanted to trace a man in a white hooded top who a witness said had been seen in the area of Charlton Churchyard and Beaconsfield Avenue at the time of the shooting.

But officers say they are no longer looking for anyone else.

Area Commander Chris Hogben said those involved in the shooting were known to each other and were part of a "small social group".

Both the victim and the man arrested lived near where the incident took place.

Frith Road, Salisbury Road, Charlton Green and part of Maison Dieu Road were all closed on Monday night, and Charlton Churchyard was also cordoned off.

But all the roads and the churchyard were re-opened on Tuesday morning.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who has any information, to contact them on 01622 690690, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have confirmed that armed officers attended the scene. A fingertip search was carried out of the area during the night, not helped by heavy rain.

House to house enquiries were also conducted.
