Fire crews were at the scene of a kitchen fire in Forelands Square, Deal

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a large fire yesterday, which tore through a two-storey semi-detached house in Deal.

Four fire appliances were called to Forelands Square at 4.30pm on Monday - and one man was treated for breathing in the thick smoke.

Eyewitnesses reported that the property's windows were shattered and that they heard screaming.

An eyewitness at the scene said: "There is thick, black smoke billowing out of the roof."

But she said it looks like it's coming from the bottom of the house.

"It has spread out up to the other occupants roof.

"The front of it is totally burnt out.

"It looks like the whole house is completely ruined, that level of smoke is ruining the next door as well.

"It looks like it is still well alight."

The police and an ambulance also arrived at the scene.

It is understood all occupants were out safely.

Jamie Morrison told the Mercury: "Just drove down Telegraph Road and it's thick smoke, could see the flames coming through the roof."

A convertible Mercedes and an Audi TT on the drive were destroyed.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and put the fire out by using main jets and water from a hydrant.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
