Sandwich facing battle to stay on Kent Cricket League Division 1

Sandwich Town are staring down the barrel of a second successive relegation in the Shepherd Neame Kent League and face their final Division 1 game at Whitstable on Saturday needing a win to stay up.

They dropped into the bottom two as a result of last Saturday’s eight-wicket defeat against Folkestone at The Butts, while fellow strugglers Ashford pulled off a surprise victory over promotion-chasing Hythe.

Those twin results mean that any one of five teams – Sandwich, Ashford, Whitstable, Tenterden and Canterbury – could still be relegated along with Orpington.

Sandwich only have themselves to blame after an insipid performance against Folkestone. Batting first, they crept to 128-9 off 50 overs, with Robert Goatham (43 not out) holding the innings together. Folkestone then coasted past their target in 35.5 overs. Sandwich now have it all to play for.
