Car hits wall after roundabout smash

A driver was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a car smash at a Kent port.

A pregnant passenger and two young children were also hurt in the incident at a roundabout on the A20 near Dover's Western Docks.

Police were called to the scene at around 2.10pm Friday after a red Renault car crashed into a wall.

It is thought the vehicle, travelling into Dover, hit the roundabout, flew over it and struck the wall.

Passers-by looked after the two children as emergency services arrived and the woman, about 20 weeks pregnant, was trapped in the vehicle.

Dover firefighters cut the roof off the Renault to release her and she was taken to the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, with head injuries.

The man driving the car was suffering from serious stomach injuries and the children escaped with minor injuries.

A spokesman for Dover Fire Station on Saturday said a member of staff at the London hospital reported the driver was "doing well".

The road was closed while Kent Police’s serious collision investigation unit and other emergency services attended the incident. Traffic in the area was disrupted.

Police have not named the man, woman and two children involved in the smash.
