Death crash victim was 'befriender of people'

KINDLINESS and activity were hallmarks of a well-loved Dover woman who died when her car crashed on the Alkham Valley road.

Susie Massey, 81, of Lower Road, Temple Ewell, was trapped inside her Nissan Micra, when it left the road.

The car was Dover-bound just before 3.30pm on Saturday when it veered into a hedge, hit a fence and rolled over. It ended up on its roof.

Mrs Massey was freed from the car by Kent Fire and Rescue but was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A post mortem recorded the cause of Mrs Massey’s death as chest and liver injuries and an inquest has been opened and adjourned. Police investigations are continuing.

A police spokesman said: “No other vehicles, or people, were involved. Speed is not thought to have been a factor in this crash.”

Mrs Massey lived life to the full and was known for her great compassion and kindness amongst her large circle of friends.

She worked in the Pilgrims Hospice shop for 21 years until September 2003 and attended St Mary’s Parish Church in Dover.

Her daughter, Jennifer, said: “My mother was a great befriender of people, especially those who were sad. She would take them under her wing. She was always busy and could be impatient and get very fidgety if things were slow.”

Mrs Massey’s funeral will take place at 1pm on Thursday, January 22, at St Mary’s Parish Church in Dover.

Donations for the East Kent Pilgrims Hospice can be made in her memory through funeral directors W J Farrier’s at 161 London Road, Dover, telephone 01304 201665.
