Driver charged with heroin smuggling

A lorry driver has appeared in court on Friday charged with attempting to smuggle 40 kilos of heroin into the UK at Dover.

The substance, worth about £2 million, was found hidden in two holdalls on top of the engine block under the driver’s cab.

Anthony Connolly, from Liverpool, was remanded in custody and is due to appear again at Dover magistrates tomorrow(Thursday).

Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs spokesman in the South East said: “Ports like Dover should not be seen as a soft touch by smugglers. Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drugs or tobacco smuggling should call our 24 hour hotline on 0800 59 5000.”
