Firefighters tackle huge barn blaze

DOZENS of firefighters battled through the night to put out a barn fire at Church Hougham, near Dover, at the weekend.

Ten tonnes of fertiliser and 100 tonnes of baled straw stored in the barn caught alight in the 20 by 40 metre barn. A further 14 tonnes of fertiliser were stored behind the building.

The fire brigade was called out shortly after 10pm on Saturday night to put out the blaze at a farm in the village.

Five pumps from Dover, Folkestone, Whitfield and Hythe attended the incident and used two hydrants and five jets to extinguish the blaze.

Relief crews from the surrounding area continued to monitor the remains of the barn and cool the hotspots well into Sunday afternoon. The cause of the fire is unknown.
