Schools may get 20mph limit

Councillors have been asked to put forward schools where a 20mph speed limit could be imposed.

The restriction is to introduced outside six schools in Kent to see if it improves safety.

Members of the Dover joint transportation board were told that outside most schools the congestion caused by parents picking up or dropping off children combined with large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists slowed the traffic anyway.

The estimated cost of introducing a 20mph limit was £7,150 for each site.

Cllr Terry Birkett said such a limit was introduced outside Walmer School after a child was killed.

“We got everything to try and help children in and out of school safely because of a child’s death.

“We know the cost of introducing these schemes is high, but what price a life?

“There are some schools you couldn’t possibly do it because they are on a main road.”
