See emergency services in action

What happens when firefighters cut crash victims from a car and how shop-lifters are caught will be two of the demonstrations at the Community Safety Day in Dover on Saturday.

The Kent Air Ambulance and Coastguard Spotter plane will also fly over the event in Pencester Gardens from 11am to 4pm, subject to other commitments.

The event is being organised by the Dover District Community Safety Partnership, and features a range of displays.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service will be working with St John Ambulance on the road accident scenario and there will also be a display by the Kent Police dog handling team.

One of the highlights will be the shoplifting incident where people at the event will watch as a young thief takes items from a local shop.

Using the Shopwatch radio, a store detective alerts the CCTV operators who track the thief, and police in Pencester Gardens will then - hopefully - detain him.

More than 25 other agencies are arranging exhibitions including children’s centres, Kent Safer Schools, Dover District Council, RNLI, Kent Crimestoppers, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Primary Care Trust.

Representatives from the Talk To Us campaign will also be at the event, to answer questions and hand out questionnaires, to get people’s views on the issues that affect them.

The event is free.
