PHIL SMITH: suffered a split and bruises

A DOVER Athletic FC supporter was attacked by two men at Redhill on Saturday after watching the Kent club play in an FA cup preliminary qualifying round match.

Phil Smith, 28, of Pilgrims Way, Dover, allegedly was punched in the face outside Earlswood train station by two members of the Surrey side’s social club.

He believes the men followed him from the clubhouse.

Mr Smith said that one of the men had caused trouble during half-time and had overheard him say he was going to the pub by the railway station after the match.

The man then turned up in a car and punched Mr Smith in the face, cutting his inner lip and bruising his cheek bone.

Mr Smith, who has supported Dover since 1989, said one of the men started shouting and being abusive just before Dover scored at the end of the first half.

He said: “The more we ignored him the more aggressive he became. At half-time we went into the bar and he was getting more and more abusive.

“After the game we went into the bar and it started up again and he was becoming aggressive so we went back to the train station which was about a 15 minute walk.

“We had 20 minutes to wait for the train so we went to the pub. A car pulled up and the two men got out. They carried on from where they left off in the club house.”

Mr Smith has not reported the assault to the police.

John Park, president and vice-chairman of Redhill Football Club, said he was dismayed at the attack and confirmed that the men involved are not club supporters but are members of the social club.

He stressed: “We are determined to carry out an investigation and make sure it doesn’t happen again. We are taking a very dim view of it and regret what has happened."
