The majority of people have no idea where iconic British landmarks are, including the White Cliffs of Dover, according to Ordnance Survey.

The map-makers spoke to more than 2,000 people last month, and discovered 50% couldn't pin point the cliffs.

And despite the clue in the name, 5% of those surveyed were under the impression the White Cliffs of Dover were abroad.

Other cartographic clangers included only 54% of people knowing Hyde Park was in London, and a mere 25% being able to point to the Yorkshire Dales - 18% thought they in a different country.

The research showed that even those who lived nearby were only slightly more able to recognise where the landmarks were.
