Section of A20 near Dover shut overnight while work to remove roundabouts continues

The removal of two roundabouts in Dover has forced a section of road to be closed tonight.

Motorists will not be able to use the A20 from the Courtwood junction to just before the York Street roundabout from 9pm.

This restriction will be lifted tomorrow (Sunday) at 5am.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place.

The major scheme to improve congestion in Dover started in February where work to remove the first roundabout near Union Street started.

This has caused some travel disruption to motorists using Townwall Street as parts of the stretch has been limited to one lane.

The second phase, which includes the removal of the York Street roundabout, is starting on Monday.

A Dover District Council statement said: "This involves building a new earth embankment to facilitate the new road alignment and diversion of existing utilities in the area.

"Before the works can start the road layout will be changed to introduce a traffic contra-flow with single lanes in each direction to safely accommodate the work zones and maintain the flow of traffic."

Lane closures will be in place between the Limekiln and York Street roundabouts.

There will be no right turn from the A20 eastbound on to Union Street, and no right turn from Union Street onto the A20 eastbound.

Traffic lights will eventually replace the roundabouts and the road will head straight towards the Eastern Docks when the work is completed.

It will also improve the links to the Dover Western Docks Revival Project scheme which is set to give Dover a new marina and cargo terminal.
