Cllr Philpott was twice Dover’s first citizen, in 2011/12 and 2013/14 and was mayoress from 2009 to 2011.

She was a councillor for the Tower Hamlets ward.

Her son, Shaun Philpott, confirmed her passing in a post on Facebook.

In a moving tribute, he said: "With a massive heavy heart, I am sad to say the one true love of my life sadly lost her battle with motor neurone disease this afternoon.

"Ronnie Philpott passed with her family around her and went peacefully and with a lot of love.

"She will be sadly missed not only by her family but by the many people she met throughout her wonderful life.

"Gone but never ever forgotten. Love you Ma."
