Dover boss quick to make first signings

FAST MOVER: Steve Browne
FAST MOVER: Steve Browne

STEVE BROWNE promised to bring in "three or four new players straightaway" when he took over as Dover Athletic manager last week - and he has kept his word.

Browne said after Tuesday's friendly against Bishops Stortford: "Stuart Maynard, Byron Bubb and Daniel Grieves will all be signing on Thursday."

The trio played for the Reserves on Saturday and then against Bishops Stortford, who agreed to Browne's request for a friendly while Leyton, Whites' scheduled league opponents on Tuesday night, were otherwise engaged in an FA Cup replay with Hendon.

Ex-Millwall youngster Bubb is a right winger who has also played for Slough, one of Browne's former clubs, and Hendon; midfielder Maynard has played for Hitchin and Hemel Hempstead; and former QPR junior Daniel Grieves plays in the middle and, according to Browne, "has a range of passing second to none".

Two new strikers, Ronnie Joe and Victor Renner, also impressed against Stortford and Browne is hopeful they too "will put pen to paper" after Thursday's training session.

He said: "It's been non-stop since I took over getting players to come down here, and the chairman is not going to be pleased with my mobile (phone) bill.

"There are still one or two more players I want to have a look at, but I was very pleased with the lads who played against Stortford. I thought we played some good stuff at times against a good Conference South side."

Whites' starting line-up on Tuesday featured just three of this season's regular players in Dean Readings, Craig Cloke and Craig Wilkins. Browne switched Wilkins from his usual striking role to centre half, the position he was playing for Gravesend when Browne tried to sign him for Slough two seasons ago.

"Craig looked more like his old self, he was a different player to the one I have been getting reports about recently, and he also provided the leadership which I think the team has been lacking."
