Protesters against plans to build hundreds of homes on Gravesham's countryside marched through a village waving banners and placards.

The two-mile long march started outside Meopham's Railway Tavern pub in Wrotham Road on Saturday and finished in Steele's Lane, Meopham, with people waving signs saying 'Save our Fields' and 'Crops not Concrete'.

The campaigners were joined by villagers from Culverstone who also feel strongly about the proposals to build on Gravesham's greenbelt and greenfield sites.

Alex Hills, for CPRE Protect Kent, said: "I have heard people say the Meopham protesters are just a bunch of old people who don't like change.

"Yet on the march you had a lot of young people and whole young families which proves the fight to protect the Greenbelt it not about protecting the past but the future."

A Gravesham Rural Forum meeting about the proposals is set to take place this evening at Istead Rise Community Centre at 6.30pm.
